The Indian Health Service is seeking dedicated and talented health professionals to be a part of a health care team, working in a professional environment to improve the health status of Native Americans.

These vacancies are being filled through the Office of Personnel Managements delegated Direct Hire Authority. The following is applicable: all applicants who meet the basic qualification requirements will be made available to the Selecting Official for consideration. Hiring preference will be given to qualified Native American and Alaska Native applicants, but Veterans' preference and traditional rating and ranking of applications do not apply to these vacancies.

Duty Locations: Positions are filled as vacancies occur and maybe located at any of the 15 Hospitals/Health Centers located in a 3 State area under the Southwest Region and can be filled in Federal, Intergovernmental Personnel Agreement (IPA) or by Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). DUTIES:

  • Provide direct nursing service in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in hospitals, clinics, or other patient care facilities.
  • Positions are in a nursing specialty such as Inpatient, Outpatient, Medical, Surgical, Emergency, Float Pool, Intensive Care, Obstetrics or other nursing specialties.
  • Work is performed on a regularly assigned or rotational basis to provide continuity of patient care during evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Salary Information:
GS-09, $55,413 - $67,878 per annum

GS-10, $57,979 - $71,713 per annum

GS-11, $67,047 - $82,131 per annum

GS-12, $78,355 - $96,436 per annum

GS-13, $86,008 - $107,509 per annum

GS-14, $95,989 - $121,396 per annum

Appointment Types: Positions maybe filled as vacancies occur to any of the following as requested: permanent, term (maximum 4 years), or temporary appointments. Positions to be filled as vacancies occur. This announcement is also to be used in filling Supervisory and Non-Supervisory positions.

Work Schedules: Multiple schedules may be filled; you are encouraged to identify the schedules you are willing to accept. Eligible schedules include: full-time, part-time, rotational, or intermittent schedule.

Relocation Expenses: Travel may be paid in accordance with Federal Travel Regulations.

Housing: Government quarters or tribal housing maybe available at certain locations, depending on occupancy; otherwise private housing only.

Promotion Potential: If a position is filled at a lower grade, an incumbent may be promoted to the full performance grade level once all legal and regulatory requirements are met; however, such promotion is neither automatic nor guaranteed.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
If selected, all applicants must meet the qualification requirements at the time of appointment.

Basic Requirements - All nursing applicants must meet both of the following requirements:

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant; AND

Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained.

In other specialties, *Applicants for Community Health Nurse postions at GS-5 and above must have graduated from a baccalaureate or higher degree nursing program.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Other Specialized fields of nursing may include inpatient, outpatient, medical, surgical, emergency (ER), intensive care (ICU), obstetrics (OB), float pool (FP), Community Health Nurse, and psychiatric.

Work experience reflecting knowledge of current nursing principles, practices, procedures, standards of care required to provide nursing care. Work experience reflecting knowledge of hospital policy and procedures relating to patient care. Work experience managing patient care in varying medical situations.

To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression based on qualification standards regulated by Office of Personnel Management for the occupation in the organization.

Additional Requirements - In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above, all applicants must meet one of the education or experience requirements as listed below:

Applicants must meet one of the following to be considered at the GS-09 level:

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service performing developmental nursing work that equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. See descriptions of specialized experience; OR
  • 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent degree. Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled; OR
  • Combination of professional nursing experience and graduate education that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-09 grade level.
Applicants must meet one of the following to be considered at the GS-10 level:

  • 2½ full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to completion of the requirements for a doctoral degree, Ph.D or equivalent. Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled; OR
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service performing work that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position as described in the vacancy announcement; OR
  • Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-10 grade level.
Applicants must meet one of the following to be considered at the GS-11 level:

  • Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education OR
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 level in the Federal service performing work that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position as described in the vacancy announcement; OR
