DUTIES:
This position is located at the new VA Hospital in North Las Vegas. You will be responsible for performing a wide range of ultrasound exams. He/she must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment.
He/she is regarded as the expert source of all ultrasound imaging, and the interpreting radiologist relies heavily on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the sonographer in providing a final interpretation.
The Ultrasound Tech operates independently and without direct supervision as the technologist responsible for the performance and coordination of all Ultrasound examinations.
This position performs above the full performance level.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Perform sonographic examinations ranging from the routine t! o highly specialized procedures;
·
Set up and adjust all equipment and manually maneuver the tranducer to perform examinations;
·
Assists radiologist during invasive procedures;
·
Responsible for obtaining pertinent diagnostic examinations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To qualify for this position, you must have the following Basic Requirements AND Experience:

Licensure or Certification.
Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at this grade level as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.

English Language Proficiency.
Medical Instrume! nt Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
EXPERIENCE:
Specialized experience is defined as experience that has provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of Medical Instrument Technologist.
GS-09:
One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level in the Federal service.
Examples
of qualifying experience include: complex imaging techniques, state-of-the-art methodologies and accurate data acquisition and manipulation to optimize the sonograms for physician interpretation; experience in recognizing the need for additional views or how to vary patient positioning to enhance the illustration of lesions or abnormalities. Advanced computer knowledge in order to understand and process complex studies to provide sonograms suitable for interpretation. Knowledge! of physiology and cross-sectional anatomy to identify location, appear! ance and function of various major and minor systems and the physical abnormalities associated with most diseases or lesions in order to interpret examinations. Experience with instrumentation and equipment sufficient to manipulate all controls to obtain the best possible images of each disease process and to determine when maintenance or repair is needed. Ability to perform Abdominal, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Vascular, small parts and complex ultrasound procedures on scheduled patients. Knowledge of basic nursing practices related to emergency cardiac arrest and resuscitator procedure, use of oxygen to assist breathing difficulties, the handling of critically ill or debilitated patients, and the management of wounds and dressings.
As a part of the Occupational Questionnaire, you will be rated on your overall knowledge, skills, work experience, and ability to perform the specialized tasks that the position entails.

Examples of these competency factors are:
1. Ability to perform diagnostic ultrasound examination on multiple areas of the body, including, but not limited to, the abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breasts, and scrotum;
2. Ability to perform vascular studies such as vertebral, renal artery, aortic aneurysm, portal-systemic shunts, etc.
3. Ability to assist in surgical procedures and fluid aspirations;
4. Knowledge of Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
