Schedule and Benefits
Shifts vary 8 to 12 hours
Occasional weekends and holidays are required
On-Call and Call-Back required (rotation is typically 1 in 6)

Minimum Qualifications
License/Certification: Active, Unrestricted Nevada RN License, current BLS, ACLS and PALS; CNOR highly desireable
Education: Minimum ADN; BSN preferred
Experience: Minimum 12 months full-time Operating Room experience within the last 36 months
Security: must be able to pass a government background check

Specific Tasks

The operating room RN will perform essentially the same duties as those required of any Nursing C! orps Officer or government Civil Service nurse of similar expe! rience and in similar duty assignments.
Provides professional nursing care for all types of patients undergoing surgery.
Circulates and scrubs for routine, urgent and emergent surgical procedures.
Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for patients of all ages during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgery. Assessment includes but is not limited to language barriers, age specific needs, disabilities, ethnic, religious, and cultural needs.
Collects and assesses significant patient history information and performs all necessary patient teaching.
In collaboration with the surgeon and anesthesia provider, establishes priorities of care for each patient.
Coordinates with other hospital units (Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Same Day Surgery Unit, Intensive Care, Step Down Unit, Obstetrics, medical-surgical units, laboratory, radiology, etc.) on patients’ progress and special equipment/supply needs.
Provides ! and receives appropriate “hand-off” report when accepting patients in the OR and transferring patients to other units. The “hand-off” report is verbal communication between nursing care providers about a patient’s status at the time nursing personnel receive or transfer patient among departments.
Accurately and completely documents patient care in accordance with hospital/department policies and procedures in written and electronic formats.
Administers medications, electrolytes, fluids, blood and blood products according to policy.
Ensures compliance with universal protocol and all other patient safety goals as applicable.
Prepares and maintains the operating room for all surgical procedures. Ensures surgical set up is accurate and room is organized to effectively and efficiently care for the patient.
Establishes and/or utilizes a checklist to monitor the physical plan of the operating room and equipment for conformity to national standards and! ensuring patient and staff safety.
Assembles supplies and equipmen! t needed for routine and emergent surgical procedures based on experience and surgeon/procedure protocols/preference cards.
Recognizes adverse signs and symptoms and quickly responds to surgical emergencies as required. Initiates CPR if required and assists the surgical team in providing ACLS and PALS measures when necessary. Types of intraoperative emergencies include but are not limited to cardiac, pulmonary, or respiratory distress/failure and hemorrhage.
Synthesizes data from a variety of sources and makes appropriate clinical decisions.
Ensures compliance with standards of care, practice, and safety in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family, and! to meet organizational mission and goals. Effectively uses appropriate communication format/chain of command in addressing professional issues.
Ensure supplies and equipment are appropriately used, cleaned, stored, and/or replenished.
Supervises patient care activities of paraprofessionals involved in the provision of perioperative nursing care.
Accurately and completely documents process improvement activities and patient and staff safety events.
Completes orientation, competency verification, and educational programs in accordance with OR Services guidelines.
Coordinates an ongoing in-service education program to continually update perioperative knowledge and skill of self and all assigned operating room services personnel.
Directs and instructs personnel in preparing, sterilizing, and caring for operating room equipment. Maintains concise and complete records and reports.
Participates in the orientation, training and evaluation of duty perfor! mance of OR personnel as required.
Participates in process improvem! ent activities as directed by the Operating Room Services Flight Commander and the hospital performance improvement department.
Serves and participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups, and assists with decision-making and process improvement. Participates in customer service initiatives, quality projects, and readiness activities designed to enhance health services.
Ensures a safe work environment for patients and employees in accordance with regulatory, infection control, national and local standards and policies.
Provides leadership by acting as a role model, mentor, and team manager.
Knowledge of a wide range of surgical procedures, medical disorders/conditions, diagnostic studies and treatments as appropriate. Able to synthesize data from a variety of sources and make appropriate clinical decisions.
Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in surgery includ! ing the : accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required; desired effects, side effects, complications of their use; and administrative requirements for proper documentation.
Possess skill in operating, maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting specialized medical equipment used in the operating room.
Possess a working knowledge of laboratory test values.
Supports and promotes excellence in external and internal customer relations. Able to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people.
